Woman At Center Of Hit-And-Run In Court On DUI Charges

The woman at the center of a hit-and-run that killed 15-year-old Kayla Peter in June talked briefly to NBC 10 Wednesday.

Susanna Goihman owned the car that police said hit Peter just outside of her East Falls home in Philadelphia. She has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Goihman, 40, was in court Wednesday on an unrelated charge. She remained silent as she attempted to outrun news cameras after learning when she will stand trial for driving under the influence in a January.

Police said that a breathalyzer test put her more than two times over the legal limit for alcohol when she was involved in a fender-bender in a city parking lot.

"The police officers, who are trained professionals, observed her to be under the influence of alcohol. She admitted to them that she had been drinking with friends earlier," said Mark Gilson, an assistant district attorney.

Goihman entered a program for first-time offenders. If she had completed six months of probation without being arrested, her record would have been wiped clean. She began the program June 3, but was arrested in connection with the June 19 hit-and-run of Peter.

"Of course, nobody knew at the time that two weeks later, Susanna Goihman would be involved in this fatal hit-and-run,"

Prosecutors said that it was Goihman's white Lexus that killed Peter.

Court documents obtained by NBC 10 News said that witnesses saw Goihman drinking the night of June 19 at two Manayunk bars. Those documents also say that Goihman also told a friend that something struck her car that night, but she drove on.

After ducking into a hotel to escape news crews, Goihman told NBC 10 News that she couldn't talk about the case, but that not a day goes by when she does not think about Kayla Peter.

Not only are Goihman keeping silent about the case, so are prosecutors, who say they are still bringing witnesses in front of a grand jury.

Goihman remains free on $250,000 bond.

Any nightmare and crime will cause an individual to continuously visualize and haunt the suspect. If the worst thing that happens to her every day is that she relives the event, thinks of Kayla, sees her face, or hears her name, then Goihman is having a great day. It seems to me that all of the events are just snowballing, and are accumulating in a way that will not prove helpful for Ms Goihman. I know that this is a stand still time for everyone who has been active in this case, but I hope everyone is doing well and still making positive and productive strides, both personal and public, in light of all of the events, both through Kayla's and Randi's.

File this under "my heart is broken" and the insincere candle she burned for the child she left to die in the gutter.

Was she thinking about Kayla while the blood of this precious child dried on her Lexus as she sped off to sleep off the vodka martinis?

Was she thinking about Kayla when she quickly enlisted a high-priced defense attorney, who arrogantly shielded his client from the police for 2 months, who instructed witnesses not to speak with police, and whose every comment to the media has been salt in the wounds of Kayla's loved ones?

Was she thinking about Kayla when she was reorganizing her assets, so she could preserve her wealth in the face of jail time?

Was she thinking about Kayla when loved ones and supporters cried out for answers in the death of an innocent girl, only to be met with silence and occasional obscenities from the Goihman house?

Was she thinking about Kayla when she was on the plane to Miami?

Was she thinking about Kayla as she hid in her parents' luxurious condo in one of the most porous border cities in the United States, while Kayla's loved ones feared Goihman would escape to her native Venezuela to avoid justice?

Was she thinking about Kayla when she wore a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt to surrender to police and finally face the consequences of her actions?

Was she thinking of Kayla as her mother posted bail and whisked her into a luxury car?

Given all this, was she really thinking of Kayla when she uttered those words to the NBC 10 reporter?

I know people for whom not a day goes by without thoughts of Kayla. And I can tell you that their actions differ vastly from those of Goihman.
